Our Story, Values, and Vision

ShelterTail began with a simple act of compassion on a cold night in Humboldt County. A homeless man, living out of his SUV, had come by the house to visit my father. With him was a beautiful tabby cat—his companion, his comfort, and the one creature he loved more than anything in the world.

He thanked me quietly for the Sheba wet food I’d sent him earlier. His eyes were glassy, almost tearful. In that moment, I saw something that changed me: a man who had so little, yet gave everything he had to keep his animal safe and fed.

I realized that while organizations help homeless people, almost nobody helps their pets—even though those animals are often their only family, their emotional anchor, and their reason to keep going.

So I put together an Aid Bag just for his cat: high-quality dry food, Sheba wet trays, treats, a self-warming blanket, flea and tick medication, dewormer, and even a raised ceramic bowl to prevent whisker fatigue. Not because it was fancy, but because every life deserves dignity—even a stray or a cat living inside a car.

That single act became something bigger.

I started thinking about all the others out there in Humboldt County—people living on the streets, in cars, in temporary situations—doing everything they could to keep their animals alive and healthy. People who often skip meals to feed their pets first. People who are judged or ignored, even though they’re doing something deeply human: caring for a creature that loves them unconditionally.

From that night forward, ShelterTail was born.

We are a nonprofit dedicated to supporting the pets of homeless and low-income individuals by providing food, warmth, parasite protection, basic care supplies, and compassion. We believe animals did nothing wrong—and their humans didn’t either. Hard times don’t make someone unworthy of love or help.

ShelterTail is built on the belief that every companion animal deserves safety, and every person deserves support in caring for the lifeline that keeps them going. Our mission started with one man and one tabby cat—but it’s grown into a community effort built on dignity, kindness, and the simple truth that no one should have to face hard times alone, human or animal.
